Back pain is something all of us will experience in our lifetime. However, it often takes acute, intense back and/or neck pain to seek help from a chiropractor. But, according to Dr. Paul Fong owner of Vital Health in Causeway Bay, when pain occurs, the problem has already been brewing for quite some time, as 90% of the nervous systems works on function and not sensation.
Some common issues treatable with chiropractic care include the following:
- Sinus blockage
- Irregular heart rate
- Dizziness such as Meniere’s disease
- Ringing in ears
- Back pain
- Numbness and tingling in extremities
- Mild cases of herniated discs
- Sports injuries
With over 18 years of experience in chiropractic and TCM care, Dr. Fong is able to easily assess deviations just by looking at the way a person stands. Using a combination of chiropractic methodologies and depending on the issue, he can include various techniques from the Palmer, Gonstead, Thompson and Diversified methods to help patients get the most relief from treatment. In addition to Paul’s diverse use of techniques, he can uniquely incorporate acupuncture when and where it is needed.
Spinal health and the methodology of acupuncture have a high degree of correlation with many of the main acupuncture meridians complementing the basis of chiropractic treatments which both reside along the main trunk of the nervous system. For example, Paul often sees patients with lung issues. The first three thoracic vertebrae correlate to the nerves that connect to the lungs. By aligning the spine, this allows the nervous system to function more optimally increasing lung function and the clearing of toxins.
During an evaluation Paul begins by looking at the individual’s posture (which patient’s can also do at home to assess if they need a treatment). When the head is bending to one side, the shoulders are uneven, and/or if the hips are uneven, it’s time for a visit to the chiropractor. In addition to these monitoring techniques, Paul also uses the trick of two scales. A patient puts one foot on each scale to see if weight is distributed evenly. Uneven results let him know where problems may be located and how the body is affected.
Dr. Fong treats patients from infants to adults. Common issues he sees in infants result from births both ‘natural’ and with interventions like suction, forceps, and c-sections. According to Paul, an infant is highly treatable with only a light touch. Suction and forceps can cause significant stretching of the spinal cord, so it’s imperative if these have been used in the birthing process to have the baby checked. All it usually takes is a tiny tap, and the results will last a long time.
In school-age children, Dr. Fong has experienced firsthand the documented rise in scoliosis, now occurring in 16.1% of children in Hong Kong. This is mainly due to overweight school bags, lack of exercise and the use of technology. When diagnosed early, scoliosis is highly treatable. When the spinal curvature goes beyond 20 degrees and the child is over the age of 12, the situation can be greatly improved but the likelihood of achieving a perfectly straight spine begins to diminish. With exercises and strict monitoring results can be better and more lasting. Many children also see an increase in cognitive function after treatment due to the increase in positive hormones and a more active, flowing nervous system.
For all individuals, Paul has a few suggestions that will result in a large increase in cognitive function and overall health.
- Sit with good posture
- If possible stand to do work in the office or at school and allow the body to move and adjust naturally
- If crossing the legs becomes necessary, that is a signal to stand up and walk around for a minute
- Purchase furniture such as sofas and beds with firm cushions
- Drink lots of water and get enough sleep
- Get up about every 30 minutes to walk around
Overall Paul believes in the power of the body. With correct spinal alignment, the nervous system can flow properly so health is maintained optimally. Paul chose to study Chiropractic and TCM because of the strong focus on prevention. He grew up in China and Hong Kong learning about natural medicine from his mother who was a TCM practitioner. He then went on to graduate from Life Chiropractic College West in California and also received a degree in TCM from Jinan University in GZ. Appointments are available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
