Reading You Are Here: Discovering the Magic of the Present Moment by Thich Nhat Hanh was inspiring and there were so many, ‘Ah, I must remember this!’ moments throughout. You are Here guides you through Buddhist principles, meditation, comprehension and is a beautiful approach to living life.
The book begins with the startlingly simple statement on the essence of Buddhist practice, “Breathing in, I know I am breathing in.” This thoroughly engaging book gently, but convincingly, coaxes you into sitting back and reflecting on your life practices, mindfulness and meditation habits, and ultimately the potential for growth in your life.
There is so much information shared within this book. I appreciated the poetry and meditation mantras. A very welcome section focuses on easy to implement practices, such as meditative walking, mindful breathing and eating. I enjoyed the part on how to be there for others as a good receiver and grow as a person helping others. The section about mindful eating really struck a chord with its simple affirmation on how one’s focus should be on the people eating with you in addition to the food. There is also a useful tip on how to take advantage of group energy when you practice mindfulness in a community. Reflecting on your past and letting go is also examined in this book and supports you to empower yourself in the present moment and move forward.
Delving into this book feels like conversing with an old soul. Thich Nhat Hanh answers your questions as they arise; his discourse is thoughtful yet simple. The book isn’t something you can enjoy in one sitting but is meant to be absorbed, processed, and contemplated.
